Camel Races!

I haven't posted much lately--- I have just been busy!  At school, we have been busy finishing our holiday decorations.  My wonderful IA's finished our door (of course, the kids decorated their stockings!) and it looks great!  I think it will stay up through January.
In the Christmas spirit, I had put up a miniature tree and decorated it with lights.  I thought it looked pretty darn cute!
Apparently, it was not enough for one of the 4-year olds in my classroom.  On Thursday, he showed up with a giant fake tree, lights and ornaments.  I guess my cute little tree did not cut it for him.... The kids had a blast hanging decorations on our new tree (which cost about $150).  Here is the finished product!
The kids have been wild at school!  Last week, I had a lot of absences due to illness.  This week, I will have several that are leaving early for the holidays.  They all know they are traveling over the vacation, but without a sense of time, they think it's immediate!  So, needless to say, the energy level was WAY up last week.

We have a full week of school before vacation is official, but it should be a fun week!  One day we are having a "holiday craft party" and the students are bringing in snacks.  Another day, we will get to perform in a school-wide (elementary) concert and they will get to sing "Jingle Bells!"  The last day of the week, we are having a PJ day and reading our favorite holiday stories.  I am just hoping that this week goes by fast!

I spent yesterday morning getting packed for Italy.  It didn't take long, as all I'm bringing are all of the warm sweaters I brought to Kuwait with me!!!  I am hoping the Northwesterner in me comes back once I'm in Italy, but I have a feeling I'm going to freeze.....  Now that I'm all packed, I am just ready to go!

Today, I went with about 20 other teachers from my school and about 60 other expats on a tour in the desert.  We went to see the "camel races."  Yes, the camel races.  More on that later.  To start out the day, my friend invited several of us over for a pancake breakfast and it was heaven on earth!  Not only did we have homemade pancakes, but bacon and sausage of the type that may or may not be found readily in Kuwait. :)  It was awesome.  Definitely a great way to start the day!  We made our way to the AWARE cultural center and loaded up onto the giant charter buses they had for us.  It was a beautiful day--- about 70 degrees out!

Okay, the camel races.  Much like horse racing; they have a stadium with indoor seating and tv screens that broadcast the races.  The races only take place between October-April, when the weather is cooler.  Back in the day, children used to race them, but the Human Rights Activists shut that down quick.  So now, instead of people riding the camels, they attach robots to them.  Yes, ROBOTS.  They have these little whips attached to them.  Now, how are these robots controlled?  There are people that control them while they follow the camels around the track in Jeeps.  Seriously.  Bizarre.  I'd like to go on and on and talk about how exciting the races were..... but, really people, they were camel races... how exciting do you think they were?  Yep.  I did get on a camel though, so I've now been on a camel in two different countries.  ***Is this what my life is coming to?  Counting the number of countries I've ridden a camel in?  Oh, Italy, hurry up and get me out of Kuwait!***
The lovely group of ladies I call my friends!
The race track

 Hanging out by the racetrack.
The 'stadium' where people can watch from.

Crossing the finish line--- with a robot on his back.
I was terrified they would kick me!
 On the camel!
 Run camel, run!

After the races, we went to a traditional farm in the desert.  It was really just a big house with lots of grass.  A huge buffet was set up, so we all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and good conversation.  I had this awesome juice that was mango and strawberry mixed together.  YUM!

Nothing else is new here in Kuwait!  I am really excited to see my parents and Julie in Italy in 5 days!  My flight leaves at 3 am, so I will come home from school on Thursday, try to sleep, wake up and shower and get ready and head to the airport around midnight.  I used to think 3 am was really early.... but it's not anymore to me, as I wake up at 4 am on a regular basis now!  This week should go by fast, besides the fun things I have planned with the kiddos, we are having a staff Christmas dinner and a kindergarten team gift exchange/party.  That's all for now, the next update will be from ITALY!
