The Countdown is On!

This past week at school was definitely a long one!  It was the first full week back for everyone after our Eid vacation and the kids and teachers were all feeling it!  By Thursday, my kiddos were exhausted and two of them fell asleep- one for two and half hours and the other feel asleep during library....  We got the happy news that this weekend is a 3-day weekend due to the Islamic New Year.  HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)  It's also nice that it happened to fall around Thanksgiving.  Turkeys were in limited supply here in Kuwait. Apparently, the government did not import many American-brand turkey's due to the fact that they are not killed the 'halal' way.  The only other turkeys that could be purchased were 'local' turkeys, which are really from Brazil!  Oh, Kuwait....
Earlier this week, one of my students came to school wearing a hoodie that says "I heart Kuwait."  I am addicted to hoodies and am sad that I only brought three with me to Kuwait.  When his mom picked him up from school, I asked her where she got the hoodie.  She asked me if I wanted one and I told her I thought it was great and again asked her where to get them.  She didn't tell me where to find one, but said that a family member had a lot of them.  The next morning, she dropped off her son and a giant bag filled with hoodies, hats and stickers.  Check it out!
My class is learning about life cycles and this week we studied the frog life cycle.  I made frog masks for the kids to use while we sang the song "5 Little Speckled Frogs."  They loved it!  We sang it every day and they had so much fun with it.  I also had two birthday celebrations and giant cakes brought in by the families.  The kids had a great time and luckily we had recess immediately afterwards so they could run around!  We also make handprint turkeys for Thanksgiving and a giant turkey for the door with their handprints around it for feathers.  The kids kept saying, "Miss Megan, I love our chicken!"  Oh well.  Close enough. :)
For Thanksgiving, I celebrated with my friend Rachel by watching the movie "Elf" and eating instant mashed potatoes, canned corn and taco muffins.  Not quite like home, but it was nice.  A lot of people here are homesick with the holidays approaching.  I'm thankful I spent so long at sea away from home and family during the holidays.  Being here in Kuwait doesn't phase me, as it's nice that I can at least Skype with my family, whereas when I was on ships I couldn't even do that!
This afternoon I treated myself to a massage and it was amazing.  Tomorrow I am headed to the gym to get in a good workout and then planning to relax all day.  Tomorrow evening I'm going to dinner at a sushi restaurant nearby.  It's 11 KD for all-you-can-eat, which is about $40.  Sounds like a lot, but when individual rolls are 6KD, it's worth it!  On Sunday I am planning to sleep in, write some lesson plans and make playdough for my kids to use.  I'm taking advantage of relaxing on the weekends, as during the week I am now keeping busy after school a few days a week tutoring a 5th grade boy.  Also, in 19 days I will be in Italy with my family running around playing tourist, so I better rest now!
I think the best part of this weekend is that now that Thanksgiving has officially passes, I can listen to Christmas music!  My favorite!  AND, I will be starting Christmas crafts soon with my kiddos and I can't wait!!!!!  Thank you to HAL for all those Christmases spent with 400 kids making crafts, I now have a plethora of activities to do with my little ones.
The only negative about Italy is the weather.  It's cooling off even more here in Kuwait.  It's only going to be in the 60's this week.  When I go to the bus in the morning for school at 5 am, it's around 45 outside.  Time to bring out the winter jackets!  I keep picturing myself walking out of the airport in Venice in 40 degree weather..... the picture that comes to mind is from the movie "Cool Runnings" when they walk out of the airport and the guy is wearing all of his clothes AND his suitcase and still shivering.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and ate lots of turkey!!!!!!
Cheers,
Megan
